Castle Konopiste Czech republic flag

Konopiště is a romantic castle in the Central Bohemian Region. The castle is known primarily as the main and last residence of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, and his wife Žofia Chotková, whose assassination in Sarajevo was the pretext for the start of World War I. The complex is now protected as a national cultural monument. It is owned by the state (administrated by the National Monuments Institute) and is open to the public.
